Here is a technique that you can use to build loyalty as a leader. If you follow this and you practice this, you can start to build loyalty with your team in a way that you haven’t done before.
Start listening to understand rather than listening to respond. What do I mean by this? Have you ever heard someone tell you a story and the entire time you were just waiting for your opportunity to jump in and save the day? But, most likely that wasn’t your role in that particular conversation? A lot of times team members confiding in you isn’t about finding a solution.
A lot of times your role is to just listen, understand, and validate. See the person, hear the person and understand the person. All of us are humans at the end of the day, and we are all wired the same way. And when we feel heard, understood, and validated, whether you agree or disagree with what they’re saying, as a leader, you’ll have a loyal advocate and a team member that will walk on fire with you.
